Philanthropy is largely, and increasingly, dominated by women. In recognition of these statistics and in an effort to maximize the power of women’s giving, the Morton Plant Mease Foundation’s “Women In Philanthropy” group was created. With a mission to inspire and empower women to fulfill their philanthropic potential by improving the quality of health care in our community, over 160 women gather annually to collectively decide where their giving will be used within the hospitals of Morton Plant Mease Health Care. Clearwater Chapter members pledge $1,000 annually, for a period of two years, while members of North Bay Hospital pledge $500 for the same two year period.
2010 Awards
(Pinellas Chapter)
First Phase of the Doyle Women's Health Initiative ~ $50,000
Morton Plant Hospital is currently undergoing a major renovation of the third floor of its Barnard Building, which will provide 19 private rooms for the GYN Inpatient Unit with a private lounge. This funding opportunity would support the hospital's commitment to being a superior community health resource ready to help women and their families take important steps towards a lifetime of well-being. Women in Philanthropy name recognition will be included on one of the newly renovated private rooms designed by women for women and scheduled to open in the Spring of 2010.
Turley Indigent Diabetic After Care ~ $75,000
Recognizing that attending physicians of Morton Plant Hospital did not have adequate resources to provide uninsured and unassigned diabetic patients referrals for ongoing care and education, last year Women in Philanthropy generously funded this new program to improve patient outcomes in the self management of diabetes. Patients participating in the program see a phycisian four times after their hospital stay, as well as receive medications prescribed to them upon discharge, and equipment like meters, strips, swabs, syringes and educational materials on how to stay healthy. This year, 58 patients have been referred through the project for ongoing diabetes care at Turley Family Health Center. Additional funding in 2010 would allow the program to expand to nearly 70 patients.
Molecular Oncology Testing for Personalized Medical Care ~ $50,000
Cancer Diagnostics is experiencing a molecular revolution as new tests for molecular disease markers are becoming available. Personalized cancer care allows the targeted treatment of patients on the basis of specific tests conducted on each individual. This project will explore the clinical utility of new molecular markers in colon, lung and gynecologic cancer patients and assess the best technical methodology for their implementation. It is expected that at least three clinically relevant molecular oncology tests for each cancer type will be available in Morton Plant Mease's Molecular Diagnostics Lab by the end of 2010 as a result of this study.
Indigent Prescription Grant ~ $15,000
The current economic crisis has significantly increased the indigent, uninsured population in the community who are unable to pay for necessary medications. This project is an invaluable service to our indigent, uninsured population who do not have the funds or access to necessary prescriptions. This program provides a one-time, 10-day supply of medications on an annual basis, which allows the patient the opportunity to pursue other, long-term solutions to the prescription access problem. There is a need to assist our patients without resources or funding in obtaining the medications they need to ensure a safe, timely discharge and prevent unnecessary readmissions.
(Morton Plant North Bay Chapter)
Good Samaritans Health Clinic: Nurse Practitioner Program ~ $25,000 Pasco County has an estimated 72,000 uninsured residents and another 20,000 who lack enough insurance to adequately receive proper medical care. This program will help fund a Nurse Practitioner for the Good Samaritans Health Clinic less than a mile away from Morton Plant North Bay Hospital. This Nurse will staff the clinic five days per week from 7:30am to 4:00pm each day. This program will assist in relieving the over crowding of the ER as well as provided needed support to our under and un-insured patients.
Unfunded Transportation ~ $5,000
MPM Case Management is faced with the sometimes difficult task of facilitating a safe and timely discharge for our indigent, unfunded patients. Many times patients do not have the financial means to afford the transportation cost (bus, taxi, etc) to their home or discharge destination. This grant would allow MPM to reduce patient length of stay, facilitate an appropriate discharge, and offer a viable discharge option, increases patient/physician/team member satisfaction.

.
Breast MRI (2006) - Due in part to capital funding challenges, the timeline has slipped into 2010 for the start of construction of the new Axelrod Pavilion, which includes the expansion/relocation of the Susan Cheek Needler Breast Center and a dedicated Breast MRI on the Morton Plant campus. Breast MRIs are currently available at our Bardmoor and Countryside campuses.
Prostate Navigator (2008) - Due to the fact that the health system's leadership team elected not to hire a Prostate Cancer Navigator, your $45,000 in desiganted funds was applied to the total granted in the 2010 cycle.
