Morton Plant Named Top Hospital in the U.S. for Open Heart Care - Named Top 100 for 11 Consecutive Years
MORTON PLANT NAMED TOP HOSPITAL IN THE U.S. FOR OPEN HEART CARE - NAMED TOP 100 FOR 11 CONSECUTIVE YEARS
For 11 years, hospitals have been reviewed for their performance in caring for patients diagnosed with heart failure and heart attacks and for 11 years, Morton Plant Hospital has been named in the Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals: Cardiovascular Benchmarks study. Morton Plant is the only hospital in the U.S. to have been named by the study all 11 years.

“To be acknowledged for the quality of heart care through a national study using objective data year after year, is beyond outstanding,” noted Glenn Waters, president of Morton Plant Mease Health Care. “Our team members and physician work consistently every day with the goal of providing our community with one of the nation’s best heart centers.”

The study -- 100 Top Hospitals: Cardiovascular Benchmarks -- examined the performance of 971 hospitals by analyzing outcomes for patients diagnosed with heart failure and heart attacks and for those who received coronary bypass surgery or percutaneous cardiovascular interventions (PCI) such as angioplasties.

The study, in its 11th year, found that these hospitals have:

  • 17 percent lower mortality rates for heart attack patients.
  • 10 percent lower mortality rates for heart failure patients.
  • 27 percent lower mortality for coronary artery bypass surgery patients.
  • 22 percent lower mortality following PCI.
  • Fewer post-operative complications (99 percent of patients were complication-free).
  • Close to 12 percent shorter average hospital stay.
  • 12 percent lower cost per case.

“We take a collaborative approach, combining the experience and commitment of our  physicians and nurses, along with technology, to help achieve nationally ranked results and I truly think that makes the difference” said John C. Ofenloch, MD, cardiothoracic surgeon and medical director of cardiac surgery for Morton Plant Hospital. “While this type of recognition is important, the best result is when we are able to send a heart patient home.”

The 100 Top Hospitals study evaluated short-term, acute care, non-federal U.S. hospitals that treat a broad spectrum of cardiology patients. Thomson Reuters researchers analyzed 2007 and 2008 Medicare Provider Analysis and Review (MedPAR) data, 2008 Medicare cost reports, and data from other sources. They scored hospitals in key performance areas: risk-adjusted medical mortality, risk-adjusted surgical mortality, risk-adjusted complications, core measures (a group of measures that assess process of care), percentage of coronary bypass patients with internal mammary artery use, procedure volume, severity-adjusted average length of stay, and wage- and severity-adjusted average cost.
